It is no secret that in the learning process, especially in the process of learning a foreign language, objective assessment and timely feedback on individual progress is of the utmost importance. Not only tests and exams can provide this feedback, but also the Olympiad.

The tradition of holding competitions and challenges to select the best-of-the-best originates from ancient times. And very soon it became strikingly obvious that such competitions can be contests of physical as well as mental dexterity. In other words, the same principle can be applied to many other areas.

Conducting academic competitions in Russia, at St Petersburg University, is a time-honoured tradition. It was in 1937 that the first academic Olympiad was held at the University.

Russia is truly one of the most beautiful and amazing countries in the world. And St Petersburg is rightfully considered one of Russia’s gems. We understand that while many have a sincere desire to come to St Petersburg to participate in the Russian language competitions, few have the opportunity to do this. Nonetheless, we do believe that people who study the language of Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoevsky in the world are special. Luckily, the cutting-edge technologies of the 21st century have come to the rescue.

Combining the centuries-old heritage of St Petersburg University and the experience and expertise of its leading academics in the field of Russian as a foreign language with advanced Internet technologies, we are proud to present a joint project of the Ministry of Education of Russia and St Petersburg University – the First Online Olympiad in Russian as a Foreign Language! Now everyone can remotely demonstrate their knowledge and competencies and receive an objective assessment of the work done.
