On September 10, the RCSC in Colombo jointly with the the Russian Language division of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Kelaniya organized a youth round table on the development of Russian language studies in Sri Lanka, attended by the university students who recently returned from a six-month language training at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) in Moscow.
The Department of the Russian Language at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of the University of Kelaniya (Colombo) is currently the only state center of Russian studies in Sri Lanka. For the years of its existence, it has produced hundreds of Russian languageinterpreters and teachers.
The practice of sending future Russian language specialists to Russian universities was renewed with the joint efforts of the representative office of Rossotrudnichestvo in Sri Lanka, the RUDN and Kelaniya University after a significant break.
This year, eight Sri Lankan students of the Department of the Russian Language of the University of Kelaniya returned back to Sri Lanka after 6 month long language training at one of the leading universities of the Russian capital.
Following the meeting, the students shared a multimedia presentation and their impressions onthe time spent in Russia, demonstrating Russian language skills.
The head of the Rossotrudnichestvo representative office in Sri Lanka, Anastasia Khokhlova, congratulated the future linguists on the successful completion of the training, urging them to motivate junior students to take a responsible attitude towards learning the Russian language, and also noting the opportunity of continuing studies on a budgetary basis for master's and postgraduate programs under the quota of the Russian Government Federation allocated to citizens of Sri Lanka.
The Russian Centre in Colombo successfully cooperates with the Department of the Russian Language of the University of Kelaniya for over four decades traditionally providing educational, methodological and consulting support.
This year, it is planned to expand the practice and organize advance trainings for the teaching staff of the University of Kelaniya in order to further develop their teaching skills and boost motivation.
